The author has thrown her very likeable heroine into the midst of the stories we've grown up knowing, sending her on a series of adventures set against the backdrops of Aladdin's Cave of Wonders, Peter Pan's Neverland, Alice's Wonderland, and others. Each new leg of the journey introduces familiar characters that are also newly imagined in ways that are surprising and fun. Winnie travels through her fairy tale landscape, meeting with danger and unexpected challenges at every step, with companions Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz) and the Wicked Witch, who covets Dorothy's confiscated slippers, is deathly afraid of water, and is also surprisingly not such a terrible person to have around. Author Jessica Reece deftly blends present day with fairytale, weaving a tapestry of colorful imagination and delightful prose. I was excited to continue reading the adventures of Winifred Jones and I must say, Ms. Reece didn't disappoint with her latest book that found me both rooting for and rooted from page one. The story manages to reconcile issues between the individuals without becoming banal or cliche and keeps the reader entertained with its dialogue and character arcs that are clever without seeming overly contrived. With no shortage of excitement in the people, creatures, and magic encountered, 'Return To Oz' will leave you wanting for more. Winifred Jones is a modern day heroine who shows that real strength can be tested in even fictional worlds - perhaps a metaphor for life itself.
I'm so glad this author put out another book, it's amazing! She pulls you in quickly and keeps you engaged, so make sure you've blocked out enough time to read it all in one go!
A delightfully unexpected twist on almost everyone's favorite childhood movie, The Wizard of Oz. Jess Reece fills her story with fun prose, thought provoking imagery, and amazing characters who misbehave in most unusual ways. Such a fun read and I suspect Jess is well on her way to becoming one of your favorite writers. Follow her on her author's page on so you won't miss her next one, already in progress!!
When I first picked this book up I will admit there was some trepidation. I'm a huge fan of Wicked and other books in that series so I was worried that there wasn't much more you could do woth the story.
Wrong! Jess Reece has created a stunning world and extraordinary adventure that is weaved together in a tapestry of amazing words.
Can't wait to read book 2.
I gave this book five star. It moves along at a quick pace and keep you turning pages. Wondering what's next was a a fun adventure. The book focuses go Winnie, a lonely single, with only her books and cat for company. She falls headlong into one her books one day and the fun begins. The book is centered around children's classics, Oz, Neverland, and so on. I would advise it for an adult audience though.
Through the book she finds friends, experiences loss and a bit of courage. Its a great read I would recommend it for adventure story lovers.
