Recently fired from her job as an Interim Fate, one of the most powerful people in the world, Tiffany VanDerHoven must move in with her mother in Eugene, Oregon. Tiffany finds living without magic hard enough, but high school? Not even movies or TV prepared her for that.

Tiffany has tumbled into “the real world,” and it baffles her.

To make matters worse, she can’t talk to her sisters Crystal and Brittany (the other two Interim Fates)—except for an hour or so, on the weekend, under strict parental supervision. Parental, meaning their mothers’ supervision. Because none of the girls can talk to their father, the Greek God Zeus, who started this entire mess when he wanted his daughters to use their Fateness to get rid of true love.

Tiffany needs to face her future, but first she must decide what kind of future she wants. One with her crazy magical Greek God family? One in the “real world”? Or can she discover the strength to straddle both worlds?

Whatever Tiffany decides will impact not just her own fate but her sisters’ fates, too.

“Grayson’s clever, humor-tinged writing is absolutely delightful.”

This is a good premise, but maybe the whole 3 part series should be sold as 1 book. Because it was pretty short.

Tiffany VanDerHoven knows how fickle her father is when he fired the Fates; promoted her and her half-sisters (Crystal and Brittany) to replace them; and in turn canned the interims. No longer residents of Mt. Olympus, thanks to the intervention with their father Zeus by Los Angeles-based Dr. Megan; each sibling resides in the United States with their moms and without their left behind magic. Whereas Tiffany lives in Eugene with her mother Serena the Oregon University Professor of Greek and Mediterranean Studies; Crystal is in Manhattan; and Brittany exiled to some unheard of place with the unlikely name of Superior, Wisconsin.

Fearing she will not adapt without magic or her support sisters, Tiffany panics over attending Central HS as her knowledge of this vicious subculture comes from teen movies. Serena explains to the principal that her daughter’s father had custody for fifteen years and home schooled her overseas. On her first day Tiffany meets Josh and Jenna. No one else thankfully talks to her; as she tumbles her way through mortal adaptation and liking Josh in spite of her dad’s program to end true love. Meanwhile Dearest Daddy asks Tiffany to come home even if it is only during school vacations; while the Fates struggle to understand why she left.

An offshoot of the charming Fates "fractured fairy tales" (nod to Jay Ward), the first Interim Fates teen contemporary is a breezy humorous satire about fitting in by an outsider who fell from the top of the Pantheon to the bottom of an American high school. Summed up by Serena explaining to her daughter the magic of aspirin, fans of the original series and young adults will appreciate Tiffany’s firsthand account of being Clueless.

This book is the first in a series of 3, set in a fantasy world that is a mix between everyday life in the US and Greek "mythology", which is presented as real, with Greek gods living on Mount Olympus and using magic. Amongst them, Zeus is quite an abusive magical being, full of himself, and has had a lot of illegitimate children (just like in mythology).

Three of those children are Tiffany, Crystal and Brittany, who have been promoted to being Fates instead of the real Fates by Zeus (who really just wanted to gain more power for himself in the process). Then the three half-sisters went down from being some of the most powerful beings in the world (albeit with pretty much no clue as to how to properly act as Fates) to becoming just regular teenagers, without any magic at all (and no clue as to how to fit in everyday society).

That story happened in "Totally Spellbound", a romance in Fates trilogy, but there is no need to read it first, this new series stands alone fairly well (but you might want to read it afterwards if you enjoy this series, just to stay longer in this nice universe!).

This book shows the story of Tiffany, who ends up in a small town in Oregon, where basically everyone is a native and she stands out a lot as a foreigner - and on top of that she does not just come from "regular" Greece but from a magical world she can't talk about. She has tried studying the customs of American teenagers by watching TV series and movies, but her references are quite outdated so it does not help much. But it does allow many a funny situation for the reader!

She is completely lost in her new life, especially in high-school, so she has to figure out a way out.

I don't want to give any spoilers so I'll stop here, but I found it a very entertaining read, even though my years as a teenager were quite a while ago. I especially enjoyed the use of Greek mythology in a nowadays setting.

As a parent (even if my daughter is still too young to read it), I would recommend that book for teenage girls nothing is inappropriate (no sex, no violence, ...). The tone is quite light and full of humour. So if you want to read it before handing it out to your daughter, you'll probably have a good time too.
Where does Tiffany tumble from? Would you believe Mount Olympus? What was Tiffany doing on Mount Olympus? She lived there because her father is Zeus.

Three of Zeus’ daughters are chosen as Interim Fates after he tricks the real Fates into reapplying for their jobs. Unfortunately the girls get into trouble due to their inexperience and their Father interfering in everything. The Powers That Be arrange for the teenagers to go and live with their mothers and their magic is taken away from them.

Tiffany has to cope with school in Oregon, interaction with normal teenagers and obeying her mother’s rules. She also misses her two sisters. The isolation from her peers who ignore her, and no magic make Tiffany unhappy. She wishes she’d never agreed to living with her mother.

This is a completely new aspect of Greek Mythology. It’s light hearted and fast moving and quite amusing. Tiffany trips over words–her knowledge of the slang of the present day has been gleaned from old films so she’s always using the wrong word. Then there’s the English teacher who thinks she knows Greek mythology and Tiffany has to restrain from telling her the truth about her father. Add to this the general ignorance of the modern world and it makes for one out of place teenage girl.

The author cleverly weaves the myths, the unhappiness and fitting into a normal teenage life with great expertise. It’s a very easy book to read and I look forward to reading the second in the series which is about one of the other sisters.
